IAP Karnataka State Branch
Recounting the illustrious past of IAP Karnataka rekindles pleasant past memories of legendary names such as Dr B R Rama Rao who laid the foundation of Indian Academy of Pediatrics Karnataka State branch in 1975 and continued to strengthen it during its infancy and early childhood as its President till 1982. The office of IAP Karnataka was established at Mangalore in 1985. From 1983 onwards great stalwarts like Dr Bopaiah, Dr D G Benekappa, Dr Ankegowda and Dr Indira Amla and others carried it through its late childhood.
The champion of breast-feeding Dr Nirmal Kesari and the torchbearer of Pediatric Pulmonology Dr H Parmesh nurtured the organization through its adolescence. Dr Sanjeev Rai contributed by managing Karnataka Pediatric Journal. Dr Santosh Soans and Dr Srinath Mugali and Dr G V Basavraj propelled IAP Karnataka into adulthood and onto the national scene.
Though it was a herculean task in the initial stages the sincere efforts of some committed members in the past few decades have helped IAP Karnataka to be reckoned as a formidable IAP state branch. Beginning with the first national level conference (PEDICON) hosted at Mangalore in 1975, Karnataka IAP has so far hosted 5 national (PEDICON) conferences. The Pandemic created unprecedented challenges for everyone but IAP Karnataka has continued the academic activities with the same vigil under the leadership of Honorary secretary general 2021 Dr Basavraj.

Presidential Action Plan - 2022
The sustainable development goals 2030 are based on the principles of “leaving no one behind” while working towards good health and well being for all. Our team this year has therefore planned to reach out to the children from Child care Institutes from the state of Karnataka to ensure that the children from these institutes get equal opportunities to grow towards their full potential in growth and development. The program ROSHAN (Reach out, Share and Nurture) is planned to reach out to at least one CCI from each district and develop a relationship of trust and empathy with the children.
Neonatal resuscitation skills are essential for all health care providers who are involved in the delivery of newborns. This year we have joined hands with the Karnataka state association of Obstetrics and gynaecologist(KSOGA) to train the birth attenders from private nursing homes especially empowering the Obstetricians with the skill of basic newborn resuscitation.
President's Message

Every minute of my more than 4 decades of medical practice has been stimulating, invigorating and at times formidable, strenuous and grueling. Yet when I look back, I see that it has indeed been a satisfying experience, however, I wish I had spent a little more time on life experiences such as spending quality time with family, traveling or on my hobby.…… My suggestion to my younger colleagues is to balance work, family and holidays to get the best out of life.

Medical knowledge has undergone a sea change in the past few decades and the average Pediatrician will have to update his knowledge from time to time by attending clinical meetings, workshops and conferences arranged by IAP through its various branches where in bona fide knowledge is presented.
It is indeed very true that information is today available at the press of a computer key, yet, the relevance of clinical meets, conferences and workshops continue as I still believe that the human touch certainly scores over virtual reality.
COVID taught us to stay connected virtually, but when so much becomes too much, and also because ‘one size does not fit all’, work is on at Karnataka IAP to create a hybrid model so that all our Pediatricians have access to authentic knowledge through both the physical as well as the virtual mode.
Let us all start afresh in 2021 and look forward to a safe, productive and satisfying future. I thank all Karnataka IAPian’s for having entrusted me with the responsibility of carrying forward this great organization to greater heights in 2021. On behalf of all the office bearers we promise to do our best in the interest of our fellow Pediatricians.

With IAP Karnataka Flag flying high by being adjourned the best branch under the leadership of Dr. Shantraj, Dr. Natesh, and guidance of HonorarySecretary General Dr. GV Basavaraj sir, expectations will be automatically higher from Team 2021, which we would try to fulfill.
Karnataka is a land blessed with different Natural environments like Deccan plateau, Sahyadri Mountains, Karavali Beaches, Silicon Valley Bengaluru, and similarly the problems pertaining to Pediatric population vary accordingly to the area with widespread disparity among the care and services, which we would try to address.
This year the theme of IAP KARNATAKA Team 2021 is “Basics and Beyond”, where we are planning to create awareness on Panchasutras
Which would ensure healthy child survival and development.
The Panchasutras are
1. Prevention of early/late marriage, early pregnancy, and proper spacing
2. Institutional delivery, Exclusive breastfeeding, and Kangaroo mother care
3. Immunisation with special emphasis on Optional vaccines, Nutrition with special emphasis on a locally grown nutritious diet and Hand Hygiene
4. Avoidance of excess screen exposure and encouraging Physical activity and mental stimulation
5. Education -Parental education, Physical, Mental, Moral education.
We at IAP Vijayanagar have adopted Suryanayak village for the past 2 years under CHARIOT program and planning to encourage each district to adopt one village.
Last but not least
I thank our President Dr. Ashok Datar and all IAPians for providing me the opportunity to work for the welfare of our children and Indian Academy of Paediatrics.
